2. What is meant by the term “spectroscopic parallax” and how does the HR Diagram and knowledge of a star’s particular spectrum help us determine its distance from Earth? What type of star occupies the lower left corner of the HR Diagram? What type of star occupies the upper rightLower left: white dwarfs
Upper Right: red giants
Spectroscopic parallax: Looking at a star's spectrum, you can determine its type, its position in the HR diagram and make an assumption on its luminosity. Knowing the flux we detect for this star from Earth, you can apply the inverse square law of light and get an estimate of its distance.
