What equations are useful for determining mass being siphoned off of a star? In a binary system?
I need help with finding out how much mass is being transferred from one star to another. Also, any information dealing with transfer from black holes would help. What equations are useful for determining mass being siphoned off of a star? In a binary system?no mass is going to be siphoned off unless one mass is much more massive than the other (such as one star 100 times the mass of our sun and the other a red dwarf) or if it is a binary system between a neutron star and normal star or black hole and normal star; however, each of these scenarios would be different and the amount of material being siphoned off would depend on the masses of the star(s), neutron star(s), and/or black hole and star as well as the distances between the stars and the eccentricity of their orbits
