What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?

It's almost 10 PM in the EST, %26amp; there's this thing that looks a lot brighter than the other stars. Is it a star or what? What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight? It's either the north star or venus. What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?
Its probably a planet. Most likely Venus. What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?Jupiter, dude. What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?
it is most likely a sattalite, direct tv or dish network etc. What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight? You didn't say where in the sky...

It's probably Jupiter.

.
It would help if we knew which direction.

If its in the southern part of the sky, its the planet Jupiter (been there for a few weeks now).

If its in the west, its Venus.

You're getting a lot of different answers because you didn't give us any details to help you. There are a lot of bright stars in the sky, so we can't help if we don't know where you're looking. What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?
FYI to siddcoolin:

The north star is not remotely one of the brighter stars. It is the 49th brightest star in the sky, meaning it just blends in with all the others.
If there is a blinking red star near it, its Jupiter, which is next to Antares right now. They are in the south.

If theres a second blot next to it, that doesn't blink, your looking at Venus and Saturn, which are paired up in the west at night right now

Check the source for a nice picture. Is that what you see? What is that really bright star thing in the sky tonight?
Yes, why do some people keep saying the North star is really bright? Maybe they are confusing the "Evening Star", which is applied to Venus when it is an evening object (even though it isn't a star).

And why, oh why do you not tell us what direction. Even if you don't know the points of the compass, at least say whether it was towards the sunset or on the other side of the sky.

If it was in the western sky, it is Venus, which is by far the brightest object besides sun and moon.

Pity though that you have only just seen it. It has been a really bright evening object for many months, and is also visible about 70% of the time (for your whole life), either evening or morning.

You need to get away from those computer games and get out more. You are missing a lot.
if its in the western sky its venus, and right beside it is saturn , if its in the ene ( east north east ) sky its jupiter, you can downlaod free printable star maps at space.com
The bright "Star" you are seeing is most likely the planet Jupiter. It is now located in the constellation "Scorpio". You can find them by looking South. Scorpio looks like a fishing hook just south of Jupiter. Best time to see them is about 10:00 p.m.
Hi girl.

Right now there must be two amazing lights in the sky. If you saw it at the west, it is likely Venus, which is the brightest "star" by now. If you saw it at the east, and close to it there was a red star, it was likely Jupiter. So we need to know where did you see it... Which color was it? Was it yellow? Was it the brightest star in the sky at that time?

I use two free programs to locate the constellations, stars and planets. I fully recommend them. I hope it could help you.

1. Stellarium (www.stellarium.org). It's a planetarium software.

2. Cartes du Ciel (www.stargazing.net/astropc/). You can print sky charts with this one.

Bye!
both Saturn and Jupiter are seen at night. both brighter than the rest, the bright one is Saturn.
Jupiter and Venus are both in the sky at 10 PM, and both are very bright. Venus is low in the west, while Jupiter is at medium height in the southeast. Depending on which direction you were looking, it could be either one.
i think it is Venus
Its the nothern star. polaris.
