2. Eventually, enough gas accumulates to initiate nuclear fusion in the core



3. Hydrogen burning continues for about 10 million years



4. Core starts to collapse and starts helium fusion in core with a hydrogen burning shell



5. Eventually, carbon fusion begins in the core, with shells of helium and hydrogen fusion above it



6. Next comes an oxygen fusion period, a neon fusion period, etc down to a chromium fusion period.



7. Chromium fusion produces iron, which won't fuse and release energy



8. When enough iron accumulates in the core, it collapses and forms a neutron star. The material above the core falls onto the core, rebounds and (in some, rather vague fashion) generates a supernovae
