What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?

What do you call the greatest position in which a star

reaches as close as it can to our zenith. On a 24

hour scale it would be called "transit" I think? But I

know that the actual transit angel will very from day

to day.

Thin what would you call its lowest position? What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises? The more appropriate term is culmination. When an object transits the meridian at it's highest altitude, it is called upper culmination (or just culmination). When it transits the meridian at it's lowest altitude (usually below the horizon, unless it's circumpolar), it's called lower culmination. What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?
When a given body reaches it's highest point in the sky you are looking at, it is at upper transit. It is bearing north or south.

When it is at it's lowest point, it is at lower transit. What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?Im cureos, whi is yure name stur man???What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?
It is transit. When a star reaches its highest point is is said to be transiting. I believe the term comes from the fact that, at that time, the star is transiting (or crossing) the meridian. More generally, the term transit is used when a body crosses anything. The meridian is the north-south line that passes straight overhead. The altitude (angle above the horizon) does not change day-to-day but the time of transit gets about 4 minutes earlier each day.

The altitude at transit is the 90 degrees plus the star's declination (which is constant) minus the latitude of the observer. This is true for the northern hemisphere, In the southern it is 90 minus declination minus latitude.

By the way, syzygy and nadir are not the terms you want. Syzygy is the alignment of three celestial bodies. An example is an eclipse. Nadir is the point directly below the observer. It is the opposite of zenith. I know of no name for a body at its lowest point. What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?I thought it was syzygy and nadir respectively but I see I am wrong. Back when I find out!

Um ... isn't a transit when one body passes in front of another in our line of sight, as in the transit of Venus? (Venus is never high up in the sky)What do you call the greatest position in which a star rises?
The highest position a star or celestial body rises in relationship to the earth is called the Meridian... That is also the M. in A.M and P.M. , for the sun is at its meridian at noon...

I am unsure of its lowest position, possible nadir, but that usally references straigh down....
