How are Star Wars fans are portrayed by the media/society in general?

It's easy to say that Star Wars fans are geeks or whatever, but why do people say this? And is it accurate? Also, does the media have a specific viewpoint on these people? If so, some examples of places these cultural assumptions/stereotypes have appeared in the media would be nice too. :)

You do not have to have a certain answer to get best answer, give your honest opinion. Everyone please feel free to comment, the more the merrier!

Thanks in advance! How are Star Wars fans are portrayed by the media/society in general? No it's not, I'm a Star Wars fan and I'm the opposite of a geek

There's a difference between being intellegent and being a geekHow are Star Wars fans are portrayed by the media/society in general? The Star Wars fans are the lucky ones - It's mostly fans of Star Trek and Warhammer: 40,000 that get all the attention. I never did work out why Star Trek is geekier than Star Wars. 40k gets the attention because it shows a dark future (it is the 41st millenium, and there is only war).

Some American tv company even made a documentry of ST fans. How are Star Wars fans are portrayed by the media/society in general?i'm a star wars fan and i'm not a geek...i know quite a lot people who like star wars and neither of them is a geek...
