If so, what would be a reasonable compensation to the star and what are their expected duties in that role?Is there value in attaching a star to a film project as an Advisor before it is funded?Only if that star is willing to use his/her contacts in the industry to actively sell the movie to investors and attract name brand talent to work on the movie. You could offer them an associate producer credit and some net profit participation. Is there value in attaching a star to a film project as an Advisor before it is funded? There's value in it if you can persuade prospective investors that the star's involvement will improve the chances of the film being completed, of drawing additional stars to the cast, and of the film being good enough to make any money.
The compensation and duties are a total variable, as the position itself is kinda bogus. An advisor can do any number of things, or nothing at all. They may have some expertise that makes your film miles better than it would have been, or they may sit at home collecting a check while you tell investors everything's great because Burt Reynolds is attached to your film in an advisory capacity.
